Comment on Living in Elon Musk’s town

From The New York Times:

Try Living in Elon Musk’s Company Town

To some, Elon Musk has given Brownsville, Texas, a reason for being, a future. To others, he’s a colonizer, flirting with white nationalists online while exploiting a predominantly brown work force.https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/24/opinion/elon-musk-spacex-brownsville-texas.html?smid=em-share

I understand just how lucky I have been to have not been affected by what should be known as the winner’s curse. That would be the same as the “lucky one” who wins a jackpot gambling and is forever cursed by a recurring gambling addiction, one that transforms into other addictions as that dragon of joy can never be recaptured. I live a simple life, one defined by reading about and reflecting on events and how people react to them around the world. My reflections are consolidated pretty much daily during walks on trails that are just lonely enough with my two best friends, a couple of life-loving golden retrievers whose greatest joys are running in the woods, swimming in lakes, smelling, listening and perhaps even chasing that which deserves to be chased- usually stick thrown by your’s truly.

A couple of questions for Mr Musk et al: do you subscribe to the insight that one should always keep the company of those who seek the Truth? And do you also see the risk in not running from those who claim to have found it? I would point out that if that is the case, some self-reflection on the true value, or mirage thereof, of omnipotence might provide some solace. We all seek meaning in and for our lives, and contributing to a “better world” is commendable, but narrow definitions of what that entails compromises its merit.

I look at this world as a place we all visit throughout many lifetimes, reincarnation being a reasonable hypothesis in my estimation because of the beneficial nature of evolution. I see the spirit of each one of us as the unique sum of consolidated experience gained through a multitude of precursor lifeforms including  all those we recognize today starting with viruses and bacteria which conjoin at the end of life in a process that culminates to this point from our perspective, in us. In my view, this process should logically continue incrementally, spirits big and small amalgamating continuously to ascend to ever more expansive “being(s), be they stars, galaxies or gods or even God.

Believers of many sorts may condemn such thoughts as blasphemous- but are they really? There is nothing here that contradicts the expressed beliefs I have read of any theology, these are extensions into new territory that are as yet unclaimed by any.  Realists may ridicule such an idea- but recall that our best, most advanced and modern physics claims to understand only about 4% of what we know is affecting our Universe. That leaves plenty of room for many other ideas. This is something I see as in the realm of possibilities. At any rate, when looked at this way, the quest to improve our world must limit/minimize detrimental impacts on any part of it, most especially parts on which any species is critically dependent on for survival, so we do not eliminate what may be critical experience(s) from our own spiritual compendium and so handicap our own potential.

The news is not getting a lot better yet

I have been keeping at least one eye on the apparently still rising tide of not so great developments that we are facing on our tiny little orb and can’t help but notice that there are no “leaders” coming up with new plans. Lots of rhetoric that we cannot let temperatures rise more than 1.5 deg. C- and lots of statements that they will do whatever it takes to get the job done, but I am not seeing a lot of big-picture strategies to get us where we need to go. What is apparent though is that the games they play are ramping up – just like a bunch of babies obsessed with monopolizing everyone’s total bandwidth to make the case they should get their way.

Xi is worried about his place in history and not seeing the villainy that would/will fall on him if he resorts to force to enforce his claim on Taiwan (like – where are they going to go?- Mars? Please- children throw tantrums over “ownership” – “wise leaders” are supposed to be beyond that. China continues to entertain its own greatness even as the trust of them by the rest of us is tested by their own blatant yet oblivious hypocrisy with regard to the UN Convention on Universal Human Rights, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, treaty obligations for Hong Kong and even little things like fishing subsidies that keep feeding their fleets to decimate stocks around the world. Meanwhile Putin is similarly threatening further warfare in Ukraine, recruiting his pal Lukashenko for the northern front, all the while saying us westerners are making him nervous about our intentions. And the crybaby who left the Whitehouse back in January continues to moan about how “his” election was stolen- he is apparently upset because he hasn’t screwed up the whole world yet- though we are still suffering the reverberations of his last round of chaos.

I tell ya- the support these guys continue to get from their sycophants is enough to flush one’s faith in humanity down the toilet. You’d figure after the slaughter that was WWII people would figure a few things out and drop- kick these sorts of leaders out of the Halls of Power as soon as they start talking about enemies on every side requiring hostile reactions to draw the tribe into battle. But no: blind faith in their bullshit is still going to be the death of all of us, just as it has been for conquerors throughout our history(ies).

I try and keep on top of a lot of what is going on every day in a few newspapers and provide reasoned and (hopefully) constructive comments based on something other than ideology. I try to follow the spirit of an approach laid out in a poem by Christian D. Larson as below:

Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing
can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity
to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel
that there is something in them
To look at the sunny side of everything
and make your optimism come true.

To think only the best, to work only for the best,
and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others
as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past
and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times
and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself
that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,
and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world,
not in loud words but great deeds.
To live in faith that the whole world is on your side
so long as you are true to the best that is in you.

It is hard sometimes- but I am hoping I can keep it- and this blog- going for a while here now. I am going to try to make adding to this a habit. I have some – what I think are- good ideas that can help move things in a better direction and am going to see if there might not be some way to share them in a way that I can help others realize opportunities while – yes I am afraid it is true- augmenting my own cash flow to maintain my modest – by choice- lifestyle. I got to that choice when I witnessed firsthand, decades ago, the cost of the relentless predations that come with our dominant capitalist system where commitments are made, and broken, and leveraged to maximum advantage by those affording the best lawyers. It becomes personal when those you know, respect and perhaps even love are victims of what are still too often legal shake downs. You just have to recognize that when lawyers start showing up someone is going to get screwed. I see life as too short to play those games as well and hope to find others, through this, that feel likewise. Until next time- ciao.

Things gotta Change

The arrival of a long predicted pandemic has sent shockwaves around the world that have interrupted international patterns of trade, business and even social interaction to a degree that was unimaginable to most of us just a few months ago. The problems with international rivalries, environmental degradation, climate change and social inequality were becoming ever more difficult to ignore even before COVID-19 emerged and they too have not gotten any easier since. Our spotty success in dealing with the pandemic has raised warning flags suggesting that smaller and more subtle incremental problems that accumulate impacts over a longer time horizon are really going to tax our capacity to deal with them. For example, mounting impacts from global climate change demand international collaboration as we develop and transition to a de-carbonised energy system as soon as possible but resistance to any change continues from established interests seeking to protect the status quo.

In this case though the global impact of this disease has, or perhaps is working up to putting the status quo distinctly off balance. The emerging consensus now is that it seems highly unlikely that a full recovery to the pre-pandemic state is likely to occur anytime soon, if ever. There are of course numerous tragedies affecting human lives everywhere as a direct consequence of the disease and our responses to it, and I do not mean to minimize them at all, but this ‘event’ is not an entirely bad thing. It is also giving us – humanity- a wake up call and an opportunity to rebuild our lives, our societies and our economies to a new, more sustainable design. It is, as alluded to below, a crisis that we cannot afford to let go to waste.

It is not just that continuing on our current course with complete disregard to future impacts will commit us to increasingly severe consequences. Even finding a perspective on what is happening that we can agree on remains an issue as some of the strongest advocates for carrying on as we are remain in positions of authority. A feature of our modern communications technologies is that credibility extends to all sides of the “debate”, itself leading to growing polarization as different arguments play out in light of various beliefs, knowledge, loyalties and other “entanglements”. It is affecting many societies as doubts about not just of the inherent fairness of our legal, economic and social systems but even of our ability to reach outcomes that work and work equitably for more than just the “chosen few” grow and spread. It is for example undeniably obvious that most countries direct the vast majority of the economic benefits generated by the whole society to a few well connected corporate entities and their owners at the expense of majorities just about everywhere.

This is widely known and acknowledged as a problem but little public progress is being made by those advocating for alternatives- they are simply just too easily drowned out and/or discredited in mass media, itself very powerful and well financed by special, though often undeclared, interests. Alternative voices are making headway by way of non-traditional media: blogs, podcasts, social media etc and a diverse range of facts, alternative facts and opinion is being heard even in tightly controlled societies. Whether this turns out to be a good thing or not remains to be seen, but the power(s) of information control and propaganda have been in play for a long time, just never quite like they are now.

Judging from the way economies are faltering, and politics are becoming polarized to the point of generalized dysfunction and even absurdity, people and nations are becoming more vocal on protecting their own perceived self- interests to the exclusion of most, if not all, others. Even including those that are widely shared, it appears we are losing touch with our common interests on many levels. Perhaps the realization that we cannot continue as we have, because those industries and ways of doing things that have delivered such enviable prosperity in the recent past are now promising only chaos, division and conflict, possibly verging on the apocalyptic, is sinking in and fear is asserting its own poisonous grip.

Some scenarios give us 10 years to get on a new path to avoid the worst effects of global climate change, others give us a few more years. And yet even here, the only refrain remaining consistent over the past 8 years are voices committed to the “Proven System” whether it is more politicians leveraging events for advantage as they simply continue to play the games they play or more businesses advocating for more investment, lower interest rates and less regulation and taxation so the world’s economic drivers can again “work their magic”. This perhaps because so few established interests can imagine anything else to replace our current tech and economic systems but it all smacks of a bit of desperation. The pandemic has changed the outlook for our future, upending economic conventions and expectations and sowing confusion on what is coming next. There is not a lot that seems to be coming easily to anyone at this point and few of the efforts of central authorities are having their planned impact anymore, overwhelmed as they are by unintended consequences.

In short, we are, one way or another, apparently coming to the end of an era that has been characterized by the beneficial use of fossil fuels and are now being driven, in many cases kicking and screaming, to take a new course. Two possibilities present themselves- one carrying on with building walls to further national and/or tribal isolation or another that has more groups working together irrespective of borders or barriers. In the former inequality in its many forms can but only grow which will inevitably lead back to escalating chaos and decline whereas the other, and I would say “more hopeful” option will see multiple “societal” experiments sharing best practices for achieving optimal outcomes. I expect the latter will also see our centralized socioeconomic (including political) structures and networks increasingly complemented by more distributed models of authority offering more diverse and balanced channels allowing for a wider range of opinion, influence and shared economic benefits, but that is for the future to tell.

Maybe- just maybe- some of our leading lights will grow up and stop acting like children when it comes to things like sovereignty. It simply does not matter and yet the powers that be threaten us all with annihilation unless we acknowledge their divine right(s) of ownership and/or command. We won’t stand for it from kids when it comes to shared toys- why do we from political leaders?

Watching and now getting ready to comment

Things are sliding badly sideways these last few months wouldn’t you say and it no longer seems even remotely realistic to suggest we might have a single civilization seeking a unified agenda. That’s a pity because the urgency of getting to that point continues to mount. We all should focus on enjoying our families and friends as much as we can, if only because in the end it is that which matters most, but we are all part of a living planet that requires more attention than it has been getting of late. Taking it for granted is likely to lead to a similar outcome as taking freinds and family for granted- they may not be there when you really need them.

So on that cheery note: I am back at my day job
